adventures in fantasy & folklore

for Chicago kids ages 6-8

This five-week session invites children to explore fantasy and folklore from around the world while creating their own magical worlds. Together, we’ll dream up gentle creatures, brave helpers, imaginative maps, and whimsical treasures—centering creativity, empathy, and belonging every step of the way.

Around ages 8–11, something important happens in a child’s artistic development.

Kids begin to care whether their drawings look real.

Drawing realistically isn’t a gift most of us are born with. But it’s a skill that can be learned—step by step, just like reading or riding a bike.

When kids are given simple tools for observation, proportion, and seeing shapes instead of symbols, their confidence returns. Drawing becomes fun again—not because it’s perfect, but because it finally makes sense.

What to Expect

Kids will spend the evening creating, eating pizza, and winding down with a movie in a fun, relaxed studio setting. We’ll start with open-ended arts and crafts, move into a guided take-home project, and finish the night with a cozy movie time complete with a pillow-and-canvas fort.

It’s a great mix of creativity, play, and downtime—while parents enjoy a few hours to themselves.

What to Bring

  • Clothes that can get a little messy

(We’ll have smocks, but paint has a way of finding sleeves!)

  • A refillable water bottle (if your child usually uses one)

  • Any comfort items your child might want during movie time

  • Optional: pajamas to change into for the second half of the evening

What Not to Bring

Please don’t send your child with candy or extra snacks unless required for medical reasons. We’ll provide food and snacks and want to avoid conflicts that can come up when some kids have items others don’t.

If your child has food allergies, medical needs, or is a picky eater, please note this on the enrollment form so we can prepare accommodations in advance.
